University of Kentucky Trumpet Studio
Baroque Trumpet Study
The Baroque (or "natural") trumpet is the valveless ancestor of the modern trumpet. The University of Kentucky is one of the few universities in the country that offers early brass opportunities to its students. Students who are interested may check out a Baroque trumpet and receive private instruction. Students should notify Dr. Dovel early in the semester about their interest in early music, as a limited number of instruments are available.
Starting Fall 2017, the University of Kentucky will offer a Certificate in Baroque Trumpet.
About the University of Kentucky Baroque Trumpet Ensemble
The University of Kentucky (UK) Baroque Trumpet Ensemble was established in 2013 by Dr. Jason Dovel. The group has performed at the Historic Brass Society International Conference, International Trumpet Guild Conference, and the National Conference for Undergraduate Research. In 2019, the group was featured in an article by Early Music America (link: https://www.earlymusicamerica.org/web-articles/early-music-kentucky/) and in 2018, the group was hired as a featured artist-in-residence with Mountainside Baroque in Cumberland, Maryland. The group has released two compact discs: Its debut CD, Music for Natural Trumpets, was released in 2018 and in 2020, the group released its second disc, J. Hyde's A New and Complete Preceptor for Trumpet and Bugel Horn. The group has collaborated with many leading Baroque trumpeters, including John Foster, Friedemann Immer, and the United States Army Historical Trumpets. The group typically has 10-15 students each semester, making it one of the largest such student groups in the world. Starting in 2017, UK now offers an innovative Certificate in Baroque Trumpet at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University of Kentucky, located in Lexington, KY enrolls more than 30,000 students. The UK School of Music has more than 400 music students pursuing bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs.
Students who are studying Baroque trumpet are expected to have a copy of Ed Tarr's The Art of the Baroque Trumpet Playing, Volume One and bring it to each of their lessons. This book is available for purchase at the Baroque Trumpet Shop.
